This is a two-week course taught by a certified instructor, scheduled to lead directly up to the June 11 offering. Students will have a chance to take two complete ACTs in test setting, at the beginning and end of the course. In between they will focus on improving their performance on every aspect of the test, with particular attention paid to those areas the initial pretest indicates more support is needed.  Instruction is provided in both material content and test-taking strategies.

ACT Prep (first offering)

This is the same course offered during the year in ninth grade. Available to rising ninth graders only. Taking this course in the summer means the student will not have a history class during the ninth grade regular school year, which opens up an additional period in the schedule exploration of other courses. Students should discuss their ninth grade schedule with their advisors before registering for this course.

Honors Ancient and Medieval Civilizations (AMC)

This class is an introduction to public speaking wherein students will learn and develop fundamental communication skills. Students will engage in research and writing in addition to delivering the following types of formal speeches: informative, how-to, persuasive, impromptu, and extemporaneous. The Public Speaking course focuses on building skill and confidence, thinking critically, and communicating effectively. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a public forum debate and to perform a humorous or dramatic monologue. This is a graduation requirement for Altamont, but is also open to other students wishing to improve their public speaking skills. Open to students rising into ninth grade and up.

This is a one-week intensive writing course for students looking to make that jump from the middle-school world of book reports to the more sophisticated, thesis-defending writing expected in high school.
